Where that number comes from. Search "forward deployed engineer salary" and you will land on roughly $156,000 — Glassdoor's average, in a $124k–$198k range. That figure measures base salary, and base is not what the role costs you. Total compensation adds equity and bonus, and public aggregators put mid-level FDE total comp at roughly $205,000–$300,000, senior at $300,000–$486,000. Staff-level packages past $630,000 exist, but those are the top of the market, not what a mid-market company hires into.
